Percentage increase or decrease

Compare an original positive value with a new value and see the percentage increase or decrease, with the calculation shown.

Ready when you are.

Inputs stay in your browser. Results use the displayed formula and are rounded only for display. The original value must be positive; zero and negative bases make ordinary percentage-change comparisons ambiguous.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter the original value.
  2. Enter the new value in the same units.
  3. Calculate: a positive result means increase and a negative result means decrease.

Frequently asked questions

What is the formula?

(New − original) ÷ original × 100.

Is percentage-point change the same?

No. Going from 20% to 25% is 5 percentage points, but a 25% relative increase.

What if the original value is zero?

Relative percentage change is undefined. Compare the absolute difference instead.
